Shovel it!

The first few snowfalls are behind us and some of it was very heavy. Anyone who has shoveled their driveway or walkway has probably lifted several hundred pounds of the white stuff already! Since we are likely to receive additional snow coverage over the coming two months, the Ontario Chiropractic Association has some tips on how you can prevent injuries while lifting snow. My summary of this is:

  • Do a five minute warm-up before you head out. There’s nothing like asking muscles to perform (including your heart) at their peak without getting them prepped first.

  • Check the weather report – if you know it’s going to snow heavily, take lighter loads by planning to shovel more than once.

  • Use a light weight pusher-type shovel. They even sell shovels with back-saving designs. They can cost a lot less than a visit to come see me when you’ve thrown out your back

  • Try pushing the snow as much as possible. I find pushing smaller amounts of snow across a driveway is much easier than larger amounts down a long driveway. It may take a little longer but your back will thank you.

  • If you have to lift the snow (and eventually you will), bend your knees rather than your back in order to lift it.

  • Dress in layers as you may find you will overheat once working hard.

  • Take a rest when you feel tired. This is especially important if you have a pre-existing condition. Those with known cardiovascular problems should consult with a health care professional before they try and tackle old-man winter!

  • Stay hydrated!
